PPL Flight Privileges

A South African Private Pilot Licence (PPL) allows you to act as pilot-in-command of an aircraft, carry passengers, and fly for recreational purposes, but not for remuneration. It is essentially a license for personal flying and not for commercial activities.

Specifically, a South African PPL holder can:

  • Act as pilot-in-command: The holder is authorized to operate an aircraft as the responsible pilot.

  • Carry passengers: A PPL allows you to fly with passengers, as long as it's for non-commercial purposes.

  • Fly for pleasure: The PPL is primarily for personal enjoyment and recreational flying.

  • Fly in clear weather conditions: Flights are typically restricted to daytime and good weather conditions.

  • Fly for business (under specific conditions): You can fly for business purposes, but not for remuneration, which means you cannot be paid for flying the aircraft.

Limitations of a PPL:

  • No remuneration:  You cannot be paid for flying the aircraft as a PPL holder.

  •  Not for commercial operations: The PPL does not authorize commercial activities like carrying passengers for hire or operating for a commercial airline.

  • Daylight and clear weather only:  The license restricts flight operations to daytime and favorable weather conditions, meaning you cannot fly at night or in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC).

  • Restrictions over built-up areas:  Flights over built-up areas or open-air assemblies of persons are limited, except for takeoff and landing.
